If you have time and talent, buy raw materials and make stuff on your own. Most people don’t need any more stuff, but nice handmade and unique items are always appreciated.

Meta Title Tags may be the most critical words on your website. This title tag is often what will be the headline in search, and Google thinks this is what is important to you. Your title tag should not be “Home” or “Joe’s Restaurant.” It should be “keyword keyword keyword city keyword keyword city.” Using restaurant as an example: “Italian Restaurant Pizza Beverly Hills ; Wine Tasting ; Los Angeles” You get 64 characters to tell your story.

You need to claim your listing. By claiming your listing, you can make edits to your profile page and add more information about your business. Google wants you to do this and make sure that it is up-to-date.

How the big three search engines do it isn’t public knowledge as each of them tries to outdo the other so they can provide the search results you are looking for. Remember those crazy commercials about search results that Bing ran last year? The funny thing is the Bing search software wasn’t that much better.

This is especially important if you are a local business with a local customer base. Online advertising is not going to do you a bit of good if your ads don’t show up in front of potential local customers. Understanding how to make this happen is full-time work for many businesses. In many years of watching Google work and watching advertisers try to work Google, I’ve come to a pretty simple conclusion. Stop trying to fool the system and answer the customer’s question!

You want to be in the Pay-Per-Click and/or Sponsored Results up there in the top yellow box and down along the right side. Pay-Per-Click is Pay-As-You-Go — your ad only shows up when somebody searches for your specific key words. Your ad is only shown to your best customers who are searching specifically for what you have to offer. You set how much you are willing to pay, and you only pay when somebody clicks on your ad — the fully qualified buyer.

Your URL matters now. Don’t throw out your current website URL to get better keywords in your URL. You get points from Google for having an website that’s been around for a while. However, if you are starting a new website, use keywords in the site [cplusplus.com] URL.

Keep it friendly. Too often, local businesses go online and suddenly start sounding like a large corporation. You don’t have to use formal terminology (unless it applies to your business)…create a relationship with your customers and visitors by keeping the tone conversational and light.

But honestly, buying a couple dollars worth of stuff really isn’t supporting local business. They need us for a few of the bigger purchases as well. If not for those they will become as extinct as the dinosaur. And someday we’ll bemoan the fact that we didn’t shop there more often.
