Back on the Big Island you can find the Green Sand Beach. It too is difficult to get to, you will need a four wheel drive to get near it but it is worth the drive.

As mentioned above every day is different, you need to respect the ocean. It may be your first day off in a month, but if the current conditions are 14′ W swells @ 13 seconds, it may not be the right day. Unless you are surfing a protected cove that is blocking most of that swell and does not have rip currents. Waiting for a better day may be difficult, but you want to be safe. When the surf is big there is a lot more water moving around. Rip currents are generally stronger under these conditions. It is also difficult to surf in poor conditions because you will be wasting all your energy battling the current. Again check with your local surf shop, or check your local surf report. Some surf shop (like ours) have a surf report right on their websites.

Okay now you know where you are going to fish and the water you will be targeting. Go back to the the tide charts. Find a time when high tide occurs in the early daylight hours or around early dusk. It doesn’t matter which one you pick. You are going to fish a two hour window before and after high tide which will be four hours of fishing time. Now you know when to go fishing.

Remember if the surf schools you thinking of booking a lesson with; don’t answer yes to these points? Then keep on looking. Otherwise you may be putting your safety on the line. Not mention that you will be wasting your money if you truly wish to learn to surf.

Outlets should also offer many sizes and types of wetsuits. Aside from having various brands of wetsuits, they should also have sizes for all shapes and ages. They can offer them in different colors that appeal to different tastes of surfers. They should also offer variants like short-sleeved rash guards.

For water temperatures from low 50’s up to 60 degrees a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit works for me and if I want just a little more warmth I add a 2mm wetsuit vest or tee shirt underneath. In water temperatures in the 50’s booties may be a must as your feet are generally always in the water. Also in water temperatures under 60 you may find a hood or wetsuit hat works, especially for rolling under waves, when the water is really cold you can get a headache with out a wetsuit hood or hat. Wetsuit gloves may be another good choice, although many surfers don’t like gloves because they can hamper grip in handling the surf board.

Third, buoyancy is an important factor, so check that the material is thin around the shoulders and arms so that they can move swiftly in water. In addition, it needs to be thick around the chest and rest of areas so that it gives you enough buoyancy to float on water.
